Punish News Outlets for Printing Photos of Virginia Journalist Murders

ny-daily-news-by-nan-palmero

Target: Tom Wheeler, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Goal: Punish the media outlets who printed screenshots from the video of the recent Virginia journalist murders and used the photos for cover stories.

Media outlets in the U.S. have come under fire for publishing front page stories using photos that show the exact moment when two journalists in Virginia were murdered on video. The New York Daily News not only printed this, but tweeted the image of its cover that showed three images from the video Vester Flanagan took as he shot and killed WDBJ-TV reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward.

But the New York Daily News wasn’t the only one. The New York Post also printed a similar image for its cover story. In addition, Newswire service Reuters posted a similar photos from the murders while reporting on the story on its Facebook page.

Many people have been disturbed not only by the violent act itself, but by the way the media has covered the story. The murderer recorded video of the tragedy and posted it to social media, allowing it to spread like wildfire and be easily picked up by the media.

It’s insane to think that an editor somewhere approved these cover stories and the use of these images with a complete disregard for the horror of this tragedy and the loved ones of the victims. Urge officials to punish these media outlets and come up with regulations for how tragedies such as this are reported.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Wheeler,

Multiple media outlets posted front page images from the brutal murders of two journalists in Virginia. The New York Daily News not only printed this, but tweeted the image of its cover that showed three images from the video Vester Flanagan took as he shot and killed WDBJ-TV reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward.

The New York Post printed a similar image for its cover story and Reuters posted a similar photos from the murders while reporting on the story on its Facebook page. The editors who approved these prints should have shown much better judgement when making the decision to do this. These actions show a complete disregard for the horror of this tragedy and the loved ones of the victims.

I urge you to punish these media outlets and come up with regulations for how tragedies such as this are reported.

Sincerely,
