Stop Giving Chimp Cigarettes and Beer at Zoo

Target: Guo Shengkun, Minister of Public Security of the People’s Republic of China

Goal: Shut down zoo accused of not properly taking care of animals and demand they be moved to a safe sanctuary.

Laughing tourists looked on as a chimpanzee reportedly smoked a cigarette at a zoo in China. If chimpanzees continue to be given abusive substances, many of them will likely suffer and die horrible deaths. Demand that this abusive zoo be closed immediately for providing its chimpanzees with abusive substances that put their health at risk and threaten their lives.

After observing the chimpanzee smoke, one tourist offered the animal a second cigarette. Previous visitors have also reportedly observed this chimpanzee drinking beer. Unfortunately, staff members have encouraged the behavior, as the chimpanzee has been smoking for over 10 years. By now it is probably at risk for lung cancer, or any number of other diseases caused by smoking cigarettes.

Zoo officials are not only conducting themselves in an unethical manner if they are doing this, but they are also breaking the law. Article three of the Animal Husbandry Law of the People’s Republic of China clearly states, “Peoples’ governments at or above the county level shall take measures…to develop quality, highly efficient, ecologically sound and safe husbandry.” Providing chimpanzees with abusive substances that can kill them is not providing animals with “sound and safe husbandry.” Rather, it is committing a heinous and disgusting act of animal abuse.

Sign this petition and demand officials shut down the Tianshan Wild Animal Zoo and that all zoo animals be immediately moved to a reputable sanctuary. It is clear that the people who work at this zoo are not concerned with the welfare of the animals in their care.

Dear Mr. Shengkun,

A chimpanzee at a local zoo has been observed smoking cigarettes on many occasions. If something is not done to stop the animal’s addiction, it will likely die a horrible death.

A tourist gave a second cigarette to the animal after he noticed the chimpanzee’s first cigarette was almost finished. The animal’s health is greatly at risk, because it has been smoking since the beginning of the century. The chimpanzee has also been seen by zoo visitors drinking beer. Giving animals addictive substances is blatant animal cruelty, as the animals are not aware of how their health may be adversely affected by such substances.

According to the Animal Husbandry Law of the People’s Republic of China, any zookeepers that are providing this animal with cigarettes are also breaking the law. Clearly, giving chimpanzees these substances is not practicing “sound and safe husbandry,” as required by article three of the law.

For all of these reasons, I urge you to close the Tianshan Wild Animal Zoo and to move all animals that reside there to a safe and reputable sanctuary. Animals in zoos deserve to be given the best possible treatment by people who care about their well-being, not callously abused by people who don’t care whether or not they live or die.

  1. Republic of China – that does not surprise me. Does the chimpanzee ask for cigarettes NO – you stupidly believe it is funny and brings you more money to give him a cigarette. Would any of the people watching this agree if you gave their precious little child a cigarette in a cage? Wake UP!

  2. It never surprises me when it’s China. They don’t seem to care about animals at all, bar a few good people that do their best to help but, are outnumbered by the bad guys.Money is the main goal for them, when it should be care and compassion.

  3. Carol Ann Firmstone says:

What a country, they are so obsessed with making money,
Let them all suffer, hate them all, evil race.

  4. China, no surprise there they are disgusting with no moral compass what so ever.cats dogs rabbits snakes it doesnt matter to them.. There evil.

  6. Get some sense & compassion — start caring about your innocent and vulnerable animals who are at your mercy — this is downright shameful!
