Target: British Labor Party politician Jeremy Corbyn
Goal: Support plan to stop the growing problem of sexual harassment of women on public transportation in the U.K.
Labor leadership frontrunner Jeremy Corbyn has proposed a plan to help fight the sexual harassment that women face daily while using public transportation in the U.K. Corbyn has said he would create a 24/7 hotline staffed by women that would be for reporting harassment and assault.
Corbyn also proposed the possibility of women-only train carriages, which received some backlash from critics who said that sexual harassment in itself needs to be dealt with rather than segregating women. Corbyn said he would consult with women on the issue and his proposals to come up with the best plan possible.
British Transport police show that recorded sexual offenses on trains and at stations increased by 25% to 1,399 last year. As crazy as the women-only carriages sound, as a woman who uses public transportation daily I would be happy with the option to ride a carriage where I wouldn’t feel threatened by men. However, the overall issue also needs to be dealt with head-on.
Tell Jeremy Corbyn you support his plan to help fight sexual harassment against women and encourage him to continue working at it.
Dear Jeremy Corbyn,
You proposed a plan to help fight the sexual harassment on public transportation in the U.K., including a 24/7 hotline staffed by women for reporting harassment and assault and women-only train carriages. Although the train carriage idea has gotten some backlash, I think it’s an important step to give women an option while the overall issue of sexual assault is dealt with.
I’m glad to see that someone is taking this issue seriously, as it is a problem for thousands of women every day. Women should not feel unsafe when they are simply using public transportation to get to work. I support your plan to help fight sexual harassment against women and encourage you to continue working at it.
