Support Program that Holds Politicians Accountable for Public Statements on Twitter

twitter-by-andy-melton

Target: Jack Dorsey, Interim CEO of Twitter

Goal: Work together with the Open State Foundation to ensure that politicians (who are public figures) are held accountable for their public statements made on Twitter.

Twitter has shut down two services operated by Open State Foundation, Politwoops and its sister site Diplotwoops, that track the deleted tweets of politicians in order to hold them accountable for statements made on the social media site. The program was intended to allow journalists and others to track when politicians flip flopped on their stance on various issues. The programs could also show how long it took the tweets to be deleted.

Twitter claims that although it supports the overall mission of the Open State Foundation’s programs, the programs violate their terms of service citing that no user should be afraid that their deleted tweets will remain public while using the site.

The Open State Foundation argues that as public figures, politicians should not be granted this protection. The foundation claims that what elected politicians publicly say is a matter of public record and should be available to anyone as a means of transparency. It says the programs are vital in showing how politicians’ opinions can change without notice.

As our world becomes more saturated with information, it’s vital that our politicians are held accountable for public statements they’ve made. On any other medium, they are held accountable, so Twitter should be no different.

Urge Twitter to work together with the Open State Foundation to ensure that politicians (who are public figures) are held accountable for their public statements made on Twitter.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Jack Dorsey,

Twitter shut down Politwoops and its sister site Diplotwoops, two programs which track the deleted tweets of politicians in order to hold them accountable for statements made on the social media site because you claim it violates the terms of service.

However, as public figures, elected politicians’ public statements are a matter of public record and should be available to anyone as a means of transparency because they are vital in showing how politicians’ opinions can change without notice.

We must hold our government accountable to be transparent in its job. I urge you to work together with the Open State Foundation to ensure that politicians (who are public figures) are held accountable for their public statements made on Twitter.

Sincerely,
