Demand Netflix Include Hourly Workers in New Parental Leave Policy

netflix-by-shardayyy

Target: Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix

Goal: Include hourly workers in new policy that grants “unlimited” maternity and paternity leave for employees in the first year after a child’s birth or adoption.

Netflix recently announced “unlimited” maternity and paternity leave for employees in the first year after a child’s birth or adoption, however they failed to include that workers in its DVD division, who are often paid hourly, would not be covered under this policy.

When asked to respond for comment on this issue, Netflix said the hourly workers still have benefits that are higher than the usual standard for that type of employee. Women’s advocacy groups say leaving this group of workers out of the policy discriminates against poor workers, especially women, who may need the paid leave policy the most.

Oftentimes adults who are working part time at one company may also be working part time at one or two additional jobs. Losing pay because of having a child can be a hard hit to an already struggling family. Netflix reported $1.34 billion in revenue last year, so helping part-time employees should certainly be feasible.

Urge Netflix to include part-time and hourly workers in its progressive parental leave policy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Reed Hastings,

You recently announced a progressive “unlimited” maternity and paternity leave for employees in the first year after a child’s birth or adoption, but left out hourly and part-time workers from the policy. Leaving this group of workers out of the policy discriminates against the workers who may need the paid leave policy the most.

With Netflix reporting $1.34 billion in revenue last year, I believe it’s possible for Netflix to continue to be progressive in its policies without going bankrupt. I urge you to include part-time and hourly workers in your progressive parental leave policy.

Sincerely,
