Target: Los Angeles, California Supervisor Don Knabe
Goal: Praise county for investigating the unsanitary conditions of a city’s animal control facilities.
Several animal welfare advocates complained that they saw dogs being kept in an unsuitable environment at one of the Los Angeles County animal control facilities. Soon after, County supervisors called for an investigation into the conditions and implemented future plans to fix the shelters.
Animal advocates posted pictures and videos of animals lying in feces-encrusted enclosures at one of the facilities. The animals were clearly kept in unclean conditions and their waste was not picked up regularly. A review of the facilities released cited a variety of problems, including overheated kennels, bad plumbing, and very cramped medical facilities.
The county supervisors elected to have one of their leaders take a closer look at the safety conditions and cleanliness of the shelters. Supervisor Don Knabe saw the conditions and felt they were unacceptable and decided to make a plan to ensure that the shelters are cleaned up and properly maintained. He was asked by the other supervisors to report back in about two weeks with a well-organized action plan to improve the facilities and ensure that they will make all of the necessary fixes. The supervisors also wanted the Department of Animal Care and Control to set up a system so that complaints from the public are heard and investigated.
Please sign this petition to thank the county supervisors for investigating the animal shelters and helping the animal control facilities come up with a plan to improve their conditions.
Dear L.A. Supervisor Don Knabe,
Numerous animal advocates made the discovery that the Los Angeles Animal Control facilities were not giving their animals proper care. Photos showed animals in filthy conditions and some were even seen encrusted in their own feces. Thank you for taking the tips from the animal advocates seriously and doing something about it.
It is great that instead of closing down the facilities, you are working with them to make a good action plan to improve their facilities. Your team of supervisors also came up with a plan to look into the public’s complaints as well. No animal should ever be left unclean and in overheated kennels while at these animal facilities. The animals deserve better. Hopefully, with your help, the shelters will be in improved in the near future.
