Target: Australia Prime Minister Tony Abbott
Goal: Drastically cut carbon emissions to mitigate global warming.
A recently-announced plan to cut carbon emissions in Australia has come under heavy fire from climate change activists who say that the plan lags behind the international community and does not do enough to actually mitigate climate change. Australia is an international leader and it needs to act like it. Demand that Australia pledge to cut carbon emissions at a significantly increased rate compared to this weak plan.
Australia is one of the largest carbon gas emitters per capita on the planet. The country has a huge coal industry, and just last year earned the dubious honor of being the only nation in the world to ever repeal an existing carbon tax. All this is being done under the purview of Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a conservative who has gone on record saying that the scientific evidence of climate change is “crap.”
Perhaps it is not surprising then that the country’s new pledge to cut carbon emissions by 26 percent by 2030 is coming under heavy international condemnation. Comparable developed nations have pledged to reduce carbon to a higher degree—and in a shorter timeframe—than Australia. The United States, for example, has promised to cut emissions by 28 percent by 2025, and the European Union has pledged to cut them by a whopping 40 percent by 2030.
Prime Minister Abbott and his government need to step up to the plate. His new plan is not enough to protect either the world or the people of Australia from the consequences of global warming. Sign the petition below to demand that Australia’s government pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions more drastically than it has laid out in this new plan.
Dear Prime Minister Abbott,
I am writing you today regarding your country’s new pledge to cut carbon gas emissions by 26 to 28 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. This is a woefully inadequate plan and you need to reevaluate your priorities.
Compared to the reduction plans of the rest of the world’s developed nations, you are lagging behind. Comparable industrialized economies have promised to cut greenhouse gases to a greater degree—and in a shorter period of time—than you have.
Climate change is a global threat and mitigating it requires everyone to pull their own weight. Based on this plan, Australia is not doing that. To be frank, that is unacceptable. I demand that you scrap this half-baked plan and release a new pledge that promises to cut your country’s carbon emissions more drastically so that it actually stands to have an impact on global warming.
