Target: Major General Magdi Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of the Interior
Goal: Remove officers who allegedly beat man on subway platform from the military police.
A viral video shows a man being held and assaulted by military officers on a subway in Cairo, Egypt. This needless police brutality shouldn’t be allowed to happen, and the officers who partook in harming this civilian should be dismissed from the police conscript.
Witnesses say the man got upset when he left his fiancée on the platform for a few minutes and returned to find her being harassed by a group of men despite officers standing nearby. He reportedly approached the officer to complain that they were not defending her and began to get angry and shouted.
After his outburst, the witnesses say that more officers appeared and they began to hit him until a higher ranking official arrived on the scene. The man explained what had happened, but allegedly the ranking officer refused to report the actions of the lower ranking officers and asked the man to leave the subway. When the man wouldn’t leave the scene the officer then slapped him, leading to the video that has been released.
These officers not only brutally attacked a man trying to get aid for his fiancée, but watched sexual harassment occur without bothering to intervene or even take action when it was requested. Minister of the Interior Magdi Abdel Ghaffar has already called for an investigation into exactly what happened based on the reports and circulating video.
These officers, including the ranking official, should all be immediately dismissed from their position and the government of Egypt needs to show they will not support officers who perform acts of violence against the civilians they are tasked with protecting. Sign to demand justice for the man who wanted the police to do their jobs.
Dear Minister Ghaffar,
Witnesses and video report a man being beaten by a group of officers on the subway in Cairo. Allegedly, this man was seeking aid to stop a group of men from harassing his fiancée, and when he started yelling the response of the police was to physically harm him.
Permitting officers to beat down civilians and do nothing to prevent sexual harassment is not a good image for a country trying to move away from a history of police brutality. This was a single man who was attacked by a group of trained military police for standing up for someone he cared about. Show the people of Egypt this will not be tolerated by dismissing those responsible for the incident on the subway.
