Target: Alabama State Health Officer Donald E. Williamson M.D.
Goal: Stop efforts to remove Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood.
Alabama and Louisiana officials have spoken out about their plans to defund Planned Parenthood in their states after an anti-abortion group secretly filmed members of the organization discussing the sale of fetal tissue for medical research. Planned Parenthood avidly denies the claim that they were part of any tissue sale, but whether or not the allegations are true is irrelevant. The Obama administration has already informed the states they are not permitted to cut funding to the organization as they are responsible for multiple different vital care procedures for women across the country.
Of the dozens of different treatments provided to men and women by Planned Parenthood, only three percent of these procedures were abortions as of 2014. They also provide STD screenings, cancer screenings, adoption referrals, and prenatal services. Fetal tissue is a uniquely rich source of stem cells necessary for medical research in finding cures for deadly diseases, and studying it can also assist in the artificial creation of synthetic organs.
Planned Parenthood helps millions of people every year. Tell Alabama to stop trying to cut off medical care that their citizens desperately need.
Dear Dr. Williamson,
Right now there is a lot of controversy around Planned Parenthood because of allegations from anti-abortion groups that they are responsible for the illegal sale of fetal organ tissue. Maybe people are outspoken against the organization because they are known to perform abortions. What they don’t know is that abortion procedures make up only three percent of their medical care and specialties. Planned Parenthood also provides free screenings for cancer and sexually transmitted diseases, referrals for adoptive parents, and prenatal services.
The Alabama government has spoken out, saying they want to cut off Planned Parenthood funding in their state. The Obama administration has informed them that this is illegal under federal law, but they won’t stop fighting until care options are limited further.
I am writing to you to ask that you protect this organization and allow the countless citizens of your state who rely on Planned Parenthood’s care to continue benefiting from vital treatments that are necessary to their happiness, health, and even the health of their children. Please do your part to stop Alabama from crippling Planned Parenthood funding.
