Protect 700 Feral Horses at U.S. Army Base

Target: Kim Reischling, spokeswoman for Fort Polk in Louisiana

Goal: Use humane methods to manage the nearly 700 feral horses around Fort Polk.

Various herds of nearly 700 feral horses have been wandering around a U.S. army base where soldiers undergo extensive and intense training. Officials say the horses are causing problems because soldiers run the risk of being kicked, bitten or stepping in horse manure.

Army officials will hold a meeting to decide the best way to handle the hundreds of horses living on the thousands of acres of the base. Some people think the horses are descended from Army cavalry horses, others think they’re descended from local farm and ranch horses, while still others think they were simply abandoned by people who could no longer care for them. Some of the horses will reportedly come up and eat right out of your hand.

Officials say roundups are difficult because the horses spend much of their time in the forest located on the Army base, and they also say that sterilization does not work because animals from other places simply wander into the area.

The most important thing, however, is to ensure that these precious animals are managed with respect and no drastic measures are taken that could hurt them. Urge officials to find a humane method to manage the nearly 700 feral horses around Fort Polk.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Kim Reischling,

Various herds of nearly 700 feral horses have been wandering around a U.S. army base where soldiers undergo extensive and intense training. Officials say the horses are causing problems because soldiers run the risk of being kicked, bitten or stepping in horse manure.

I’m glad you have not taken any drastic measures yet that could really hurt the horses, and I hope that you continue to keep a humane mindset when it comes to handling these precious creatures. I urge you to find a humane method to manage the nearly 700 feral horses around Fort Polk.

Sincerely,
