Target: EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy
Goal: Protect public health and the environment by banning dangerous nuclear power.
The risk assumed by using nuclear power is unacceptable. There are innumerable ways to obtain electricity, but none have the sheer potential for absolute destruction of life on Earth as nuclear power. As demonstrated by high-profile reactor meltdowns such as the Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima incidents, nuclear power is far from fail safe.
Even now, four years after its initial meltdown, Fukushima continues to dump hundreds of thousands of gallons of radioactive waste into the ocean every single day. The so-called experts are powerless to do anything about this. They don’t know what to do. Just this single incident poses a monumental threat to the continued existence of life as we know it on this planet. But this is not an isolated incident. To date there have been 99 such accidents worldwide.
The U.S. leads the world both in the use of nuclear power, representing more than 30% of all nuclear power plants, and in the number of nuclear incidents it is responsible for, which represent 56% of the pie. In terms of nuclear policy, our legislators clearly are the very definition of “poor global citizen” and “bad neighbor.”
Demand a permanent ban on nuclear power, effective immediately, replacing it and the associated economy with solar, wind, and sustainable forms of hydroelectric power (water wheels, wave-generated power; not barrier dams).
Dear Administrator McCarthy,
As you may already know, the U.S. contains over 30% of all nuclear power plants and is responsible for 56% of the global total of 99 nuclear incidents to date. This track record is abhorrent, a reflection of abhorrent policy and inadequate governmental regulation. The known outcome of nuclear power is unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue. No supposed benefits arising from this practice are sufficient to justify the environmental devastation wreaked or the toll on individual health that has arisen from U.S. endorsement of nuclear power.
I must insist that you honor your charge to protect the environment by demanding a permanent and complete ban on nuclear power. In its stead, the economy can be kept alive and our power needs met by replacing nuclear infrastructure with solar power, wind, and sustainable forms of hydroelectric power (water wheels and wave-generated power; not barrier dams).
Any proposed energy plan other than the complete and immediate adoption of the suggested change in policy is nothing more than an empty platitude, one by which I will not be taken in. It is obvious what must be done. Regardless of the cost of such a change, it pales in comparison to the cost of continuing down the road to nowhere on which we currently find ourselves. It is time to cut our losses and, finally, make the right call. Quit allowing toxic waste to be pumped and dumped into my backyard. End nuclear power once and for all.
