Target: James Cross, Natural England, CEO
Goal: Give cattle vaccinations to prevent bovine tuberculosis instead of killing wild badgers.
More badgers may soon be selectively killed, a practice known as culling, in England. If this is not stopped, many innocent animals will soon be dead.
Some farmers are asking government officials for permission to kill more wild badgers to try and ensure their cattle do not catch tuberculosis. However, after a 10-year study was conducted, it was determined that culling badgers is not helpful in reducing the spread of the disease unless several badgers are killed over extremely large areas. Since hunters often miss, it is highly unlikely this will be the result if people are allowed to continue hunting them.
Moreover, since fewer badgers were hunted down in some areas than what was originally expected, the problem could become even worse, as badgers spread to larger areas when their lives are interrupted. Because neighboring Wales realizes this is the case, they are choosing to vaccinate their cattle instead. Many experts also feel doing this is a great solution to a daunting problem, since vaccinations have been successful in staving off other diseases in animals.
Sign this petition and tell government officials to vaccinate their cattle instead of killing badgers. Doing so will likely only make matters worse, and these innocent animals don’t deserve to die.
Dear Mr. Cross,
People may soon be granted permission to kill more badgers in England. If this is allowed, many innocent animals will soon die.
Results from a recent study showed that culling badgers is not helpful in preventing the spread of bovine tuberculosis unless many badgers are killed over really large areas. Considering that most people are unsuccessful at hunting the animals, allowing more unskilled marksmen to try and kill them is not going to be helpful in solving the problem.
In addition, doing so could make matters worse, as badgers tend to spread to even wider areas when their natural patterns are interrupted. Wales is therefore vaccinating their cattle to try and prevent them from catching the disease, since vaccinations usually prevent the spread of disease in animals.
For all of these reasons, I encourage you to vaccinate your cattle instead of killing wild badgers. These animals do not deserve to die when there are other ways to solve the problem, especially since it has been discovered that doing so will most likely make the disease spread more quickly to even more cattle.
