Target: Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana
Goal: Allow Medicaid users access to essential reproductive health care at Planned Parenthood, such as STD and cancer testing, birth control, and pre-natal care.
Critical government funding has been withdrawn from Planned Parenthood following a public scandal in which unsubstantiated accusations were made against the organization and its alleged “illegal sale of human tissue.” Anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress, an organization responsible for a smear campaign against Planned Parenthood, claimed that the organization profits from the sale of aborted fetus tissue. Despite the fact that no legitimate investigation into the claims has occurred, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has used the scandal to push his anti-abortion rights narrative.
This move comes despite the fact that neither of the two Planned Parenthood clinics in the state offer abortions. In fact, only three percent of Planned Parenthood services are abortion-related, and no abortion-related service is publicly funded. By withdrawing the state’s Medicaid contract, thousands of women will no longer be covered for other Planned Parenthood services, which include sexually transmitted disease testing, screening for cervical and breast cancers, as well as pre-natal care and birth control.
Governor Jindal’s decision is not only based on spurious and unconfirmed claims, but will take away essential reproductive healthcare from thousands of women statewide. Cutting off Medicaid access to Planned Parenthood could result in an increase in sexually-transmitted diseases as well as unwanted pregnancies. Sign the petition below to demand that this hasty and ill-thought-out decision be immediately reversed in order to ensure that all women are receiving adequate reproductive health care.
Dear Governor Jindal,
In light of unverified claims that Planned Parenthood is illegally profiting from the sale of human tissue, Louisiana has withdrawn state Medicaid funding from the organization. This decision was made in spite of the fact that none of the state’s Planned Parenthood centers perform abortions or donate tissue.
Planned Parenthood focuses on many aspects of reproductive health, and only three percent of its total procedures are abortion related. This decision will unnecessarily deny thousands of women Medicaid coverage for things like STD and cervical cancer tests, contraception, and pre-natal health care at these facilities.
Withdrawing funding from Planned Parenthood without any proper investigation was a hasty and irresponsible move that will affect the reproductive health of thousands of women. Possible negative effects of the decision include an increase in unwanted pregnancies and STD’s due to inaccessibility of proper health care. We, the undersigned, demand that your decision is reversed pending a proper investigation conducted by qualified professionals.
