Goal: Applaud choice to provide employees with up to a full year of paid leave after the birth of a child.
All new parents are now going to be able to take up to a year off after the arrival of a child if they work for Netflix. The company recently announced its new policy, which allows new mothers and fathers to take off as much time as they want within the first year while still receiving their paycheck.
Employees have the option of working full time, part time or sporadically within the first vital year of new parenthood, giving them the proper time to meet their new child while not having to worry about also supporting it. This also extends to parents who have recently adopted.
The White House found that only 39 percent of working Americans have the option to get some kind of paid parental leave after having a child. Most workers have to apply for disability pay in order to receive compensation after a birth and the time they are able to take off is often minimal, especially for men, and pregnant women often aren’t given compensation if they can’t work in the last months of pregnancy.
Netflix is offering their employees an easier route that respects their struggles as new parents as well as their value as employees. Almost every country requires that mothers are given part of their wages after the birth of a child, and about half of the countries require the same for fathers; however, the U.S. is on neither of those lists.
It is a travesty that a country that is often seen as the pinnacle of freedom and human rights denies new parents comfort while getting to know their child. Hopefully through the demonstration of large corporations like Netflix, more and more companies will start giving parents the benefits they deserve.

The recent move by your company to allow all employees to take paid time off after having a child is a step in the right direction. This is an example for how all corporations should treat their employees and will hopefully help start the trend of proper compensation and time off for new parents.
After a new child, parents don’t want to take the time to jump through bureaucratic hoops to just get some portion of a paycheck or use all of their sick days so they can bond, and the fact that your company has recognized the need of stability for both new mothers and fathers will help take America in the right direction for parental leave.
