Target: Fort Lauderdale City Manager Lee Feldman
Goal: Don’t reinstate cop who was already fired for anti-black racism.
A cop named Jeffery Feldewert who was already fired from the police department after making a series of racist comments is being reinstated onto it in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This man cannot be trusted to fulfill his duties without prejudice and bias. Demand that the Fort Lauderdale Police Department not rehire this apparent racist and let him go back out in uniform on the streets.
Officer Feldewert was terminated from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department recently after an internal investigation found him responsible for writing a number of racist comments on his Facebook profile. In particular, he shared posts thanking black people for being arrested so that they made the evening news more entertaining, claimed that such arrests were “typical hoodrat behavior,” and posted pictures of a patch he had apparently put on his uniform that read “savage hunter.”
Despite this disgusting racism, Fort Lauderdale City Manager Lee Feldman offered Feldewert his job back and his reduced punishment to a mere 10-day suspension because kicking him out “put several of the prosecutions of arrests he was involved with in jeopardy.” This is absolutely no excuse for putting a man with racist views towards black people back on the beat.
Fort Lauderdale Police Department has an absolutely atrocious record of racism and anti-black prejudice, and this is just yet another example of it. Sign the petition below to demand that this man not be rehired and make sure that he never gets to put his badge and his gun back on and roam the streets of Fort Lauderdale again.
Dear City Manager Feldman,
I am writing you today regarding your recent decision to reinstate Jeffery Feldewert onto the Fort Lauderdale Police Department even after he was fired for making racist comments. I have absolutely no idea how you can justify this to yourself.
Your city’s police force has a problem with racism that is impossible to deny. Just this past March, your city had to fire three police officers after an investigation found them responsible for producing and distributing a video featuring Ku Klux Klan iconography and derogatory manipulated photos of President Obama, as well as for sending texts to each other discussing killing black people.
If you think that was just an isolated case of a few bad apples then you have not been paying attention. These views are being fostered and incubated in police departments around the country and Feldewert’s racist comments prove that your city’s department is no exception.
There is no reason that Feldewert should not be subjected to the same standard of punishment as those three officers were back in the spring. With his apparent views toward African Americans, he is an outright public danger. I demand that you fire this man once again so that your city can never be put at risk of his prejudices.
