Target: The Cheesecake Factory Chief Executive Officer David M. Overton

Goal: Praise the chain restaurant for committing to source humanely-raised ingredients.

The Cheesecake Factory is one of the biggest chain restaurants in the United States with almost 200 locations across the country, serving more than 80 million people per year. The company has recently announced that it will be embracing the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare for its farm animal procurement program, according to the Humane Society of the United States. According to the Cheesecake Factory’s Animal Welfare Guidelines, the chain restaurant will “Work with our suppliers to set specific standards in such areas as space and density, use of antibiotics, hormones and feed additives, physical alterations, bedding and housing, social behaviors, environmental conditions, and transparency in treatment.”

The Cheesecake Factory believes that animals should live in freedom from hunger and thirst, from discomfort and pain, fear, and distress. Finally, the Cheesecake Factory believes that an animal has the freedom to express normal species behavior. One of the first steps the Cheesecake Factory will commit to is eliminating cruel pig gestation crates by 2020 from its operations. The Cheesecake Factory is also committing to using exclusively cage-free eggs.

This is a huge victory for activists who have been pushing restaurant chains and corporations to treat animals humanely in their procurement operations. With so many customers eating at Cheesecake Factory restaurants each year, this change could make a difference in so many animals’ lives.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Cheesecake Factory CEO David M. Overton,

I am writing this letter to you to express my praise for Cheesecake Factory’s announcement that it will be implementing the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare for its animal procurement process. By refraining from using gestation crates for the pork you procure as well as going fully cage-free with eggs, the Cheesecake Factory will positively impact the lives of thousands of animals for years to come.

This announcement has the potential to create a ripple effect in the chain restaurant industry. Other restaurant chains may follow your example on animal welfare, creating a precedent for the safety and well being of animals procured for restaurants. I also believe that this is not only the best decision for the animals you procure, but for business as well, as customers enjoy giving business to companies that treat animals ethically.

Once again, thank you for your act of solidarity for animal welfare. Your actions will help to ensure that the lives of animals are valued and protected.

Sincerely,
