Stop the Murder of Photojournalists in Mexico

flag of mexico by Alex Covarrubias

Target: Mexico City Police

Goal: Find and prosecute person who killed photojournalist.

A photojournalist was shot and killed in Mexico City recently after moving from another Mexican state because he felt threatened. Ruben Espinosa worked for several different news outlets in Mexico. He was found dead along with four women.

Espinosa left the state of Veracruz after he noticed he was being followed and men on the street were giving him looks that made him feel threatened. At one point, a group of men even waited outside of his home.

Veracruz is a particularly dangerous area for photojournalists; in the last 5 years 13 of them have been killed. Demand that the Mexico City authorities find and prosecute the person responsible for killing Espinosa to show that they will not tolerate violence against photojournalists.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mexico City Police,

A photojournalist and 4 women were found dead in an apartment in Mexico City recently. The photojournalist, Ruben Espinosa, had recently moved to Mexico City because he felt threatened in Veracruz.

Thirteen journalists have been killed in the last five years in Veracruz. This is unacceptable and needs to end. We the undersigned urge you to find and prosecute the person responsible for killing Espinosa and the 4 women so Mexico City doesn’t end up like Veracruz.

Sincerely,
