Remove Force-Fed Ducks from Farmers’ Markets

Target: The California Farmers’ Market Association

Goal: Ban the sale of force-fed ducks, known as foie gras, at all farmers’ markets under the association.

Foie gras is a delicacy produced by force feeding ducks or geese massive amounts of corn until their livers expand up to ten times their normal sizes due to becoming diseased and full of fatty deposits. Ducks that are used for foie gras are kept in very small cages, sometimes for their entire lives, and have long metal pipes shoved down their throats several times a day that pump two pounds of pressurized feed directly into their stomachs. This massive amount of feed causes intense internal pressure, and can sometimes cause the birds to choke to death on their own vomit, become too weak to fend off vermin, or even literally burst.

A ban on foie gras throughout the state of California was proposed but unfortunately overturned by the court due to a technicality. Costco, Safeway, Target, Giant Eagle, Whole Foods, Wolfgang Puck, and countless other restaurants and retailers have already refused to sell foie gras, and it’s time for California’s farmer’s markets to do the same. Farmers’ markets are known and admired across the country for their organic, ethical, and sustainable food products. Right now, with the sale and production of foie gras still allowed, this standard is not being upheld. Tell the California Farmer’s Market Association to ban the sale of foie gras and take a stand against animal cruelty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear California Farmer’s Market Association,

Foie gras, a food product permitted for sale at your farmers’ markets, is a delicacy that requires the extreme force feeding of ducks or geese until their livers expand up to ten times their normal sizes due to being full of unhealthy fat deposits and disease. These birds have long, metal pipes forced down their throats several times a day that pump two pounds of pressurized feed into their stomachs, and it can cause these birds to choke to death on their own vomit or simply explode.

A statewide ban on the sale of foie gras was unfortunately denied by the courts due to a technicality, but organizations like yours still have the power to forbid this cruelty from within. Dozens of retailers and restaurants, including large companies such as Costco, Target, Safeway, and Whole Foods, have already banned the sale of foie gras from their places of business. This type of disgusting and graphic animal cruelty has no place in farmer’s markets, or from any retailer. Please ban the sale and production of foie gras from all of your markets and vendors.

  1. Humans are disgusting creatures. Every one of the sins are committed daily by the fat greedy breed called ” humans”. I have come to hate most people bc of their sense of entitlement and gluttony.
