Target: Steven Miles, Queensland Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection
Goal: Prevent a proposed expansion plan to operate a coal mine for 16 more decades.
Air quality and local freshwater supplies are in danger if a coal mine is approved to operate for 162 more years. Our future should involve more renewable energy sources, not dirty coal. We must speak up now to stop this ridiculous expansion plan that will put more stress on the local water sources as well as contribute to more greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.
Located in Chinchilla, Queensland, Australia, the Cameby Downs Coal Mine currently produces 2.3 metric tons of coal per year. The life of the mine has already been approved to operate for another 45 years but Yanzhou Coal Mining Company, the owner of the mine, wants to expand operations to the year 2177.
Cameby Downs is an open-cut coal mine, meaning its operations destroy the surface of the land. The mine is located within two watersheds, causing a threat to freshwater sources due to the mine’s exposure to air and rainwater. Known as acid mine drainage, rainwater carries high concentrations of sulfuric acid from the mine to freshwater sources above and below ground. This polluted water is harmful for humans, animals, and plants.
Not only is the mine destructive for the local environment but also for global air quality. If this mine continues to extract coal for 162 years, the coal obtained from the site will most likely be burned for energy, contributing to our overall greenhouse gas emissions. High greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change, which refers to an increase in global temperatures, rising seas, changing landscapes, storms and droughts, and suffering wildlife populations.
By signing this petition, you are demanding that the Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection deny the proposal to operate Cameby Downs Coal Mine for this absurd amount of time.
Dear Minister Miles,
Our Earth is changing due to the burning of dirty fossil fuels. We should look to renewable energy sources rather than rely on destructive nonrenewable sources, especially coal. The owner of the Cameby Downs Coal Mine wants to extend the mine’s life for another 162 years. This is a ridiculous amount of time. You must deny this proposal for the safety of local freshwater supplies and global air quality.
The Cameby Downs Mine hopes to continue to extract 2.3 metric tons of coal a year until the year 2177. The open-cast mine could easily destroy the local water supply through acid mine drainage. The coal extracted during this lengthy time frame will be burned for energy, which would emit greenhouse gases into our atmosphere and contribute to climate change.
I urge you to please take action and deny the proposal to extend the life of the Cameby Downs Coal Mine. You will be protecting local water sources and global air quality.
