Protest Severe Budget Cuts at Animal Shelter

Target: City of Upland Mayor, Ray M. Musser

Goal: Protest drastic budget cuts that will cause the rise of euthanasia rates of the animals at a shelter.

A city council announced that they approved a $300,000 funding cut for an animal shelter in Upland Memorial Park as a segment of a proposed $43 million budget. Animal supporters argued that the budget cuts would remove about 40 percent of the shelter’s funding making it a “high-kill” shelter, meaning that the rate of euthanizing would rise to deal with the budget loss.

The volunteers at the animal shelter believe that the drastic budget cuts proposed will unquestionably lead to a much higher euthanasia rate and a decline in public participation and support. However, Mayor Ray Musser defends it by saying that the drastic budget cut was a result of a need to hire more police officers to protect the Upland community.

Musser says that the city is in need of capital and there are no other areas to draw funds from. Members of the nonprofit group Friends of Upland Animal Shelter are on a mission to get the city council leaders to revise the budget cut. A committee made up of city staff and community members has been formed to come up with a plan to deal with the budget cuts for the time being.

Please sign this petition to protest the drastic budget cuts and ask that the Upland City Council revise it to save the lives of animals.

Dear Mayor Ray M. Musser,

As you are aware, the Upland City Council has approved a hefty funding cut for the Upland Animal Shelter. The $300,000 budget cut will cause drastic changes to the shelter including an increase in the euthanasia rate of the animals and a decline in resources needed to take care of them. A budget cut means that there might be a wide reduction in staff and necessary partnerships with veterinarians.

If there aren’t enough people to take care of the animals, then the only option would be to euthanize them. Animal activists and supporters disapprove of the budget cut and are asking the city council to revise the bill. Cutting costs with no understanding of the negative impact is irresponsible and risks the lives of hundreds of innocent animals.

The shelter cannot survive a 40 percent cut in their budget and so many animals will die as a result. Please ask the city council to reconsider the budget cut and revise the bill.

  1. Lost Cecil to a murderer. Got to be a way to protect/save Cecil’s family. Switch them to another preserve or SOMETHING. I know of at least two nearby. Can’t think of names right now, but one man trained under George Adamson, and another man works for Prince William.

  2. David Hunt says:

Ray just handed down a death sentence to all the animals. Let’s face it they aren’t being put to sleep, they are being murdered. Hope Ray sleeps better at night now!!
Time to oust him as we don’t need another carer politician!
