Target: Ms. Jen Welter, First Female Coach in National Football League History
Goal: Congratulate first female coach for breaking the glass ceiling of football.
Football is a, sometimes dangerously, masculine game. It’s watched primarily by men, played exclusively by them, and up until recently, it was coached entirely by them. However, a woman has finally broken the glass ceiling of professional football in the United States by becoming a coach for the Arizona Cardinals. This is a momentous day for all advocates of gender equality and this woman, Jen Welter, deserves a great deal of congratulation and praise.
This is not one of those stories where the football team feels bad for a woman who wants to play and lets her be on the team out of pity, occasionally letting her kick field goals or something. Jen Welter is a certifiable badass that has played contact sports for the majority of her life and can more than hang with any group of men out there. She has played 14 seasons of professional football in the Women’s Football Alliance and spent most of her college years playing rugby. Welter is to become the coach of part of the team’s defensive squad, its inside linebackers. This position is one of the most aggressive on the field and will be a good test of her coaching chops.
The most important part of this story is that Ms. Welter earned this spot coaching in the entirely male dominated league. It is irrefutable proof that women are just as capable as men and can succeed similarly in any field if they are not discouraged from even attempting to start. Please sign here to congratulate this truly awesome woman and wish her the best of luck for a stereotype busting career.
Dear Ms. Welter,
I am writing to wish you the profoundest of congratulations on your new position as a coach for the Arizona Cardinals. As you well know, the world of professional football is overwhelmingly dominated by men. It is watched mostly by them, played almost entirely by them, and until now, it was coached by them. You have broken a glass ceiling that many had not even dared dream was breakable and I want you to know how much that means to me and all of the girls in this country that want to play football.
Whether you know it or not, you have become an amazing role model. You have earned every part of this new position and it just goes to show that a woman can succeed in anything a man can if she is not discouraged or has the determination necessary to silence her critics.
This is a great day for gender equality and you are the sole cause. Congratulations again on your new job and I wish you all the best. Please continue to shatter peoples’ notions of what a woman “should be” and show them what one woman, you, wants to be.
