Target: Lawyer Michael Cohen
Goal: Stop reportedly saying marital rape is legal.
Michael Cohen,”special counsel to Donald Trump,” allegedly told the Daily Beast that it’s legal to rape your spouse when the news outlet called to inquire about Trump’s rape allegations.
“You’re talking about the front-runner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as private individual who never raped anybody,” Cohen said, referring to the widely publicized allegation that Trump raped his then-wife in 1989. “Understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law,” Trump’s lawyer said.
Cohen allegedly repeatedly stated “you cannot rape your spouse.” A lawyer should know that all rape, including marital rape, is illegal.
Ivana herself claimed he raped her and that she felt violated. This was part of their divorce case and was exposed in the book “Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump.” by Harry Hurt III.
The author tells of the devastating event in detail, starting from the violence leading up to the rape. The author claims that Donald took his anger out on Ivana after having surgery to remove his bald spot because he wasn’t happy with the results. “Your f–king doctor has ruined me,” he screamed, holding her arms as he pulled handfuls of hair from her scalp.
The book states that Trump tore her clothes off, unzipped his jeans, and “jams his penis inside her…”
The following morning, Trump menacingly asks “Does it hurt?”
Trump’s lawyer took it upon himself to explain what Ivana meant when she claimed her husband raped her. “It’s not the word that you’re trying to make it into. She felt raped emotionally. She was not referring to it [as] a criminal matter, and not in its literal sense, though there’s many literal senses to the word.”
Neither Donald nor his lawyer have the right to explain what Ivana’s clear words meant. Cohen deliberately misconstrued the meaning, as if “rape” applies to many things other than its definition. When Ivana described the incident in 1989 as “rape,” it’s unlikely she was describing her emotional state.
Cohen has since allegedly threatened the Daily Beast saying “I’ll come after you, Daily Beast and everybody else you possibly know,” if they published the story.
“I’m warning you, tread very f–king lightly, because what I’m going to do to you is going to be fucking disgusting. You understand me?”
Trump and Cohen are apparently misogynists who are contributing to rape culture by making light of it. Their alleged statements are disrespectful towards Ivana and all rape victims.
Demand that Michael Cohen stop doing a disservice to society and rape victims by making dangerous and false claims that spousal rape isn’t real — making it seem excusable — and demand he stop threatening people.
Dear Mr. Cohen,
When the Daily Beast contacted you and Donald Trump regarding Trump’s rape allegations, you allegedly stated that raping a spouse isn’t possible and that it’s legal to do so. These are false and dangerous statements. You misconstrued the alleged victim’s words by claiming she used the word “rape” to describe feeling emotionally unsatisfied.
Your apparently misogynistic attitude and statements contribute to rape culture where the serious and traumatic results of rape are not taken seriously. The words “you cannot rape a spouse,” sends the message to people that they can rape their spouse without consequences and it’s unacceptable and untrue. Marital rape is illegal. As a lawyer, you should be aware of this fact.
We demand that you do not spread false and dangerous information that makes light of rape. Furthermore, you allegedly threatened reporters and you need to apologize to them.
