Cecil the Murdered Lion Deserves Justice

lion-by-peter-harrison

Target: Johannes Tomana, Attorney General of Zimbabwe

Goal: Severely punish the hunter who lured Cecil the Lion out of his home, shot him with a crossbow and gun and beheaded and skinned him.

Officials in Zimbabwe have reported that Cecil the Lion was illegally hunted for $55,000. Cecil was allegedly lured out of his home in a national park using food, shot with a crossbow, tracked for 40 more hours, then murdered with a gun. Cecil’s head was cut off as a trophy of his murder, and he was skinned. Cecil was part of an Oxford University research project and wore a GPS collar.

Officials believe a local safari operator was involved and allowed one or more foreign hunters to kill the poor lion. The safari operator is a member of the Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association. Professor David Macdonald, who founded the Oxford Wildlife Conservation Research Unit that worked with Cecil, said that research has shown that if one male is killed, “the resulting perturbation” can lead to the deaths of other males and to the deaths of his cubs.

Hunting is already a disgusting hobby as it is, but to murder an innocent lion meant to assist in research that helps the species is completely despicable. By signing this petition, you will let officials in Zimbabwe know that when the hunter(s) is caught, he or she needs to be severely punished.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Johannes Tomana,

Cecil the Lion was illegally hunted for $55,000 by being lured out of his home in a national park using food, shot with a crossbow, tracked for 40 more hours, then murdered with a gun. Cecil’s head was cut off as a trophy of his murder, and he was skinned.

Hunting is already a disgusting hobby as it is, but to murder an innocent lion meant to assist in research that helps the species is completely despicable. I urge you to severely punish to the maximum degree the hunter(s) who committed this horrific crime.

Sincerely,

I hadn’t noticed any posts on Care2 regarding Zimbabwe’s complicity in decimating their own wildlife in the name of so-called conservation. This is a corrupt government! Zimbabwe’s current ranking is 156/175 on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (2014).

    From:
    https://www.thedodo.com/zimbabwe-baby-elephants-sale-1203676885.html

“… [there are concerns over] 60 infant elephants captured by wildlife authorities in Zimbabwe late last year. Since their capture from the wild, these infants have been held in a facility in Hwange National Park awaiting their fate.

In last week’s Telegraph newspaper, it was reported that the Zimbabwean government is now pressing ahead with plans to sell 27 of these infant elephants to China, to be part of a Zimbabwe Safari experience.”

    From National Geographic:

“Zimbabwe officials have acknowledged launching an effort to sell young elephants—which they say can bring $40,000 to $60,000 each—to foreign buyers. They say this is necessary to reduce an overpopulation of elephants and to bring much needed revenue and ecological balance to their country’s struggling parks. And they say that selling baby elephants abroad is more humane than killing elephants to reduce herds.”

There’s an excuse for everything. And just because an action is legal doesn’t mean it’s ethical. Hey Zimbabwe: Ever hear of ecotourism – which is actually sustainable?

And while Americans (myself included) take a morally superior stance to what’s happening in Africa (China, India, Japan, etc.), we need to address the unacceptable slaughter that is sanctioned by our own state and federal wildlife legislators.

Some of these ‘conservation’ agencies are obvious about where they stand on hunting and trapping by calling themselves ‘The Department of Fish and GAME,’ or ‘Wildlife MANAGEMENT,’ or ‘Natural RESOURCES.’ Others disguise themselves.

In every case, however, these policy makers – who are charged with the task of protecting our flora, fauna and the environment – are ALL avid anglers and hunters themselves. Why? Because they claim to understand nature better than those of us who respect and celebrate biodiversity.

Typically, they are also ranchers, agriculturists, land developers, or have vested interests in utility companies, rock/coal mining, oil drilling… Well, you get the picture.

On August 27th, in spite of a majority in opposition, New Mexico will surely bring back those torture devices known as steel-jawed leg holds to trap – among other innocent individuals – cougars. (They already allow hounding [where packs of unleashed hounds chase prey to the point of mental and physical exhaustion] bears and cougars.)

You know what I’m talking about: the ones with jagged metal teeth that snap with such force that it can break leg bones. The ones that inflict such terror and acute pain that its victims desperately try to chew their own limbs off. The ones that subject its victims to extreme weather conditions and predation. Yhea; those.

If slaughterhouses for horses are approved by Congress, what do you think will happen to the tens of thousands of our beloved wild horses and burros that the Bureau of Land Management currently has stockpiled in corrals throughout the West without shade or shelter? Hell, we already ship them live to Canada and Mexico just to be ruthlessly butchered.

And we have canned hunts and trophy hunting taking place every stinkin’ day right here!

Somehow – and I wish to God I knew how – the majority has to regain control from the special interest groups currently running the show. Before species they deem as useful are all bred in captivity only to be slaves or slaughtered.

  2. He’s not a sportsman. He’s a sickening piece of sh.t murderer who is oblivious of life. He shouldnt get away with his crap again and he should be barred from hunting everywhere! He shouldn’t be a doctor of anything! Scumbag!

  3. Hopefully, many years of imprisonment in Zimbabwe
    not in U.S.

How could he face to his children if he has any……
