Target: Republican Party Chairman Randy Brogdon
Goal: Retract statements urging Oklahoma to ignore court decisions protecting reproductive choice.
Former state senator and Republican Party Chairman Randy Brogdon recently called upon the governor and legislators of Oklahoma to end the practice of abortion.
In a fundraising letter, Brogdon wrote that the “federal courts don’t have the authority to make us kill babies” and also added that the state should “[s]hut Planned Parenthood down immediately for their illegal actions, and prosecute the abortion doctors who violate their oath to ‘do no harm.’” This interpretation of Roe v. Wade is detrimental to reproduction rights across the country and Brogdon’s dangerous rhetoric needs to be stopped.
Brogdon was attempting to solicit donations to help him end abortion in Oklahoma. Planned Parenthood has four clinics operating in the state, but Brogdon is determined to cut off their funding and shut them down. Brogan said that it’s “time for Republicans to stand for the principles we claim to have” and for Republicans to “stop the killing of the unborn.” The majorities of Oklahomans will support this bold action, but it will take someone to lead the fight.
Clearly, Brogdon thinks he is the person to lead the fight against women’s reproductive rights and endanger their health by removing funding from Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood not only performs safe abortions for women, but they also provide them with contraception, breast cancer screenings, and other health care needs.
Chairman Randy Brogdon needs to stop spouting his own ridiculous interpretation of Roe v. Wade and stop attempts to shut down Planned Parenthood. Women need access to Planned Parenthood for their health and Brogdon’s language jeopardizes women’s reproductive rights. Please sign the petition below and urge Chairman Brogdon to stop attempts to strip women of these rights.
Dear Mr. Brogdon,
As Republican Party Chairman, I understand that you are dedicated to upholding your party’s values. However, your recent remarks concerning ignoring Roe v. Wade and ending abortion completely in Oklahoma are detrimental to women’s reproductive rights and I urge you to end this rhetoric.
Banning abortion outright and prosecuting doctors that perform them is not the answer. Additionally, removing funding from Planned Parenthood will only lead to women going to dangerous lengths to receive abortions and will only hurt women who need breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings. It will also cut off access to birth control and worsen the amount of back-alley abortions that will no doubt be a cause of your proposed policies.
Please reconsider your statements and stop trying to reverse what the Supreme Court has already decided in Roe v. Wade.
