Target: Newton County Commissioner John Douglas

Goal: Force resignation of government official for allegedly using racial slur against a black woman.

Reportedly calling an African American woman a “knee grow” for protesting the American flag has gotten Georgia’s Newton County Commissioner John Douglas in hot water. The use of racial slurs cannot be tolerated by any public servant. Demand that this man resign from office as soon as possible.

The #NotMyFlag movement has been gaining traction around the country, and the actions of its supporters—many of whom burn or otherwise desecrate the American flag in protest—have gotten many conservatives riled up. Douglas is apparently among them.

In response to a photograph on Facebook of a black woman giving an American flag the finger and mimicking wiping herself with it, Douglas commented that “she is just a cheap street walker knee grow who lays down for white men.” While he initially denied making this disgusting comment in the face of media criticism, he has since taken responsibility for it—even going so far as to say that he would do it again.

Though he has offered an apology to the county commission for his comments, his willingness to stand by them nonetheless demonstrates that he is only sorry that they garnered so much attention, not that he understands why they were wrong. Such racism cannot be abided in our public officials. Sign the petition below to demand that Douglas resign from his office at once for his bigoted attack.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Douglas,

I am writing you today regarding the comments you made toward an African American woman protesting the American flag where you called her a “a cheap street walker knee grow.” This is unacceptable and you need to resign from office immediately.

The fact that you seem to have the audacity to believe that you can remain on as a public servant in the wake of this remark is incredible. In your position as commissioner you are tasked with fulfilling the duties of the county. Your comments reveal that you cannot be expected to do that objectively and without racist and misogynistic bias.

A person has the right to desecrate the American flag. A black person has the right to engage in political action without having racist slurs leveled against them. A woman has the right to speak her mind without sexist comments coming her way.

Your pathetic half-apology cannot repair your credibility. The people of Newton County deserve a better commissioner—one that doesn’t find it within themselves to hurl racist slurs at the drop of a hat. I demand that you resign from office at once.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
