Success: L.A. School District Celebrates Three Years of Meatless Mondays

Vegetarian Pizza

Target: LAUSD Superintendent, Ramon Cortines

Goal: Applaud L.A. Unified School District for helping to drastically reduce animal slaughter by participating in “Meatless Mondays” for the last three years.

The number of animals slaughtered last year was 400 million fewer than in 2007, seven years earlier. This is thanks, in no small part, to the efforts of the ForceChange community, as well as L.A. Unified School District’s “Meatless Mondays” program, which is responsible for removing meat from 700,000 meals per week. A previous ForceChange petition called for U.S. schools to adopt Meatless Mondays, and it is slowly but surely being met with success.

If the sharp decrease in the occurrence of animal cruelty isn’t enough cause for everyone to celebrate, these facts should be enough for everyone to get behind: The drop in demand for meat translates to decreased incidence of disease in humans, less pollution entering the environment, and less land being subject to conditions that result in desertification. In short, Meatless Mondays are a step toward sustainability.

Please join me in congratulating the L.A. Unified School District for having successfully executed their Meatless Mondays program for the last three years. Thank them for demonstrating commendable compassion and socially-conscious action. May they continue to lead by this example for many more years to come.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Superintendent Cortines,

I am writing you today to congratulate you on a job well done. Three years ago, your school district implemented Meatless Mondays.  As a result, meat is not present in 700,000 student meals that would otherwise contain it.  Last year, 400 million fewer animals were slaughtered than seven years prior. Your school district obviously played a noteworthy role in the broader shift as a whole.

The drop in consumer demand for meat that is responsible for these figures represents a shift toward greater overall health in the general population, a decrease in pollution entering the environment, and a decrease in the abusive land management strategies associated with the meat industry (or at least a decrease in the total area affected by this). These actions have been a great boon to your students and to the broader national community alike. Thank you, and please keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
