Remove Toxic Chemicals from 99 Cent Store Products

Target: CEO of the 99 Cent Only Stores Stephane Gonthier

Goal: Remove products with toxic, harmful chemicals from the shelves of your stores.

A recent study done by HealthyStuff alongside the Campaign for Healthier Solutions found that over 81 percent of all dollar store products such as toys, jewelry, school supplies and household items contained one or more hazardous chemicals at an unsafe level. Many people who shop at dollar stores are unable to afford shopping at other places, and it is cruel to exploit those who are already poor by selling them harmfully toxic products.

The  chemicals found in many of these products are linked to birth defects, reduced fertility, cancer, learning disabilities, diabetes, and more. PVC or vinyl plastic known to cause asthma and lung problems, and lead known for its impact on brain development, have also been found in the products. Almost half of the products tested contained two or more of these hazardous chemicals and almost a third of vinyl products surpassed the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s acceptable chemicals levels of children’s safety. Please tell 99 Cent Only Stores to thoroughly test their products and stop from harming their customers.

Dear Ms. Gonthier,

I am concerned for the health and safety of your customers, and I hope you are as well. Forty-nine percent of tested products sold by dollar stores tested positive for at least two harmful chemicals known to cause permanent lasting effects on its consumers. Phthalates, known to cause birth defects, cancer, and diabetes among other ailments, was found above harmful levels in almost a third of tested products. Of the other chemicals found, known side effects include asthma, lung effects, and severe impacts on brain development. Dollar store products were also found to contain lead.

In addition to concerns about the quality of your plastic products, 40 percent of dollar store profits go towards food goods that were not tested by this study or anywhere else. However, little is known about highly-processed foods other than their lowered nutritional value, and many of the packagings are known to include the synthetic hormone BPA. I insist that you place stricter regulations on your products and packaging, and test them thoroughly for harmful chemicals to ensure the safety of their users. Until that is done, I will not be comfortable buying or recommending any of your products.
