Target: Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer, Ian C. Read
Goal: Stop the use of horse urine in hormone medication and the abuse of pregnant horses necessary for extraction.
Conjugated equine estrogen, known as CEE, is a chemical found in the urine of pregnant horses that is used in Pfizer’s drugs for menopause and osteoporosis, and it requires mares to be repeatedly pregnant for up to 12 years at a time. Pfizer makes more than $1 billion per year off the use of CEE and have no intention on stopping its use despite the pain it inflicts on horses and the health threat it poses to humans. Demand Pfizer end its use of CEE and protect the health and well-being of animals as well as consumers.
During the process it takes to acquire CEE, mares spend six months out of their 11-month long repeated pregnancies in stalls that are too small for them to comfortably turn around or even lie down. They spend the majority of their time standing on cold concrete floors with bulky urine bags between their back legs that cause infections and severely limit their movement. The foals and infertile mares are often sold to “kill buyers” and brought to slaughter.
What’s more, instead of bringing help and healing, drugs containing CEE are not well tolerated by humans and can lead to cancer and cardiovascular issues.
Sign the petition below to let Pfizer know that you will not use, purchase, or recommend any of the company’s products until this cruel and unnecessary treatment of horses comes to an end.
Dear Mr. Read,
Menopause and osteoporosis are serious ailments, and many people rely on the medications you provide to help and heal them. But right now, your medication is only causing more damage than good. Medications such as Premarin, Prempro, and Duavee are produced with CEE, also known as conjugated equine estrogen, and are hurting both your customers and your work animals. CEE has been directly linked to cancer and has caused cardiovascular issues in others, at the expense of your mares that are repeatedly pregnant for 12 years at a time in uncomfortable and unhealthy conditions.
I urge you to stop using CEE to create your products. It is harmful to the consumer, and harmful to your work animals. There are almost always risks when taking hormone medications, but there are countless alternatives that do not risk cancer or other permanent, even deadly, effects. I refuse to allow myself or anyone I know to come to harm or indirectly support the harm of an innocent animal by using your products. I will continue to boycott your inhumane, potentially life-threatening products until Pfizer adjusts its production methods accordingly.
