Ensure Speedy Justice for Rape Victims

Target: Loretta E. Lynch, Attorney General of the United States

Goal: Demand that every rape kit get tested within a short amount of time to give rape survivors the justice they deserve.

It is estimated that possibly tens of thousands of rape cases remain unsolved in the United States because the rape kits used to collect evidence remain untested in police departments. This absurdity comes despite a $1 billion allocation of taxpayer money for testing the numerous untested rape kits. While these kits remain untested, the rapists in those rape cases remain free. Demand that rape kits get tested within a short amount of time to help solve rape cases and give the rape survivors the justice they deserve.

In 2004, the Debbie Smith Act was passed by Congress to provide hundreds of millions of dollars allocated toward law enforcement efforts to reduce the DNA evidence backlog. This bill is an important legislative measure in working against rape. Although this legislation was passed, it is estimated that in the last five years, DNA evidence for around 32,000 unsolved rape and murder cases were never sent to a lab and analyzed. This means that the rapists in those unsolved cases remain free, and they have the chance to commit more assaults. 71 percent of rapists are serial offenders, and the longer they are left free, the more damage they may do to other individuals. The most effective measure of preventing rape is to persecute rapists early on, and this is not possible if rape tests remain untested.

Please sign the petition below to demand that the backlog of untested rape kits get tested, and that rape kits are not left untested for more than a year. The survivors of rape attacks deserve justice for the horror they experienced, and the rapists must get caught and properly punished.

Dear Attorney General Lynch,

I am writing to you on account of the allegedly tens of thousands of rape cases that are unsolved, mainly due to the lack of testing done on submitted rape kits. This means that the rape attackers in those tens of thousands of rape cases remain free. Most rapists are repeat offenders, and if they are not caught after the first attack, they may continue attacking other innocent individuals and causing them unthinkable horrors.

Survivors of rape have endured unimaginable pain, and knowing that their rapists remain free while they live with the horrors of the experience may only make the pain harder to endure. Please ensure that every rape kit that gets submitted get tested within a year, preferably as soon as possible. Survivors of rape must be given the justice they deserve and have their attackers caught and properly persecuted.
