Target: Mr. Noor-ul Haq Uloomi, Interior Minister of Afghanistan
Goal: Praise ban on toy guns to change culture of violence.
Children in Afghanistan will no longer be allowed to play with toy guns thanks to a blanket ban placed on them by the country’s interior minister. The ban comes after a number of children suffered eye injuries caused by toy guns while celebrating the end of Ramadan this year. It is also part of a larger push to curb the culture of violence that has sprung out of militarization and instability in the region. This is a wonderful and progressive step towards a peaceful world that must be encouraged.
Worldwide, violence is too often glorified and celebrated through movies, music, and even children’s toys. There can be no doubt that violence is a large part of life for children being raised in the Middle East, regardless of their home country. Whether that violence comes at the hands of religious fundamentalists or an invading foreign army matters little–it is all damaging to young, sensitive minds. Gun advocates are fond of saying “guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” but why on earth would you let a child play with the facsimile of something that is used to kill people?
There is no reason for any child, regardless of their homeland, to be playing with anything that even resembles a firearm, let alone those who live in a region where gun violence has become all too common. A ban like this would do a great deal of good globally and hopefully this ban in Afghanistan will be the first step towards a brighter global future. Please sign here to commend everyone involved with making this ban possible and to encourage a further curtailment of cultural violence.
Dear Mr. Uloomi,
I am writing to express my deepest admiration for Afghanistan’s new ban on children’s toys shaped like firearms. As you well know, violence, specifically gun violence, is glorified and celebrated globally and that is to the detriment of people everywhere, especially children. I think the new ban that you have instituted is an amazing step forward for your nation and hopefully this idea will spread across the globe.
People who favor guns are fond of saying that guns don’t kill people, rather they are the tools that people use to kill each other. Given that this statement is even true, what person in their right mind would give a child the facsimile of something that is used to kill people? Why would anyone normalize their use at playtime, teaching kids that they are essentially toys?
I personally applaud your efforts in trying to shift the nature of your culture. Violence is a curse on this planet and you have taken the first step towards ridding your nation of it. Thank you for making this change and please continue to foster peace in all arenas.
