Denounce Call for Mass Murder of Ocean’s Sharks

Target: Brian Kilmeade, host of Fox & Friends

Goal: Apologize for calling for the killing of sharks to protect human swimmers, and instead advocate for their protection.

Sharks need to be hunted down and murdered en masse to protect swimmers, according to Fox News host Brian Kilmeade. Sharks are a vital part of ocean ecosystems and their disappearance would spell doom for all of us. Denounce this reckless proposition and demand that this man apologize for advocating it.

This summer season has seen a highly-publicized rash of shark attacks off the Eastern coast of the United States, including no less than seven incidents off the Carolinas that have, tragically, cost several people limbs. In light of this seemingly increasing frequency of attacks on humans, people are coming out of the woodwork to come up with ways to protect swimmers and other people enjoying our nation’s beaches.

Unfortunately, not all the ideas being espoused are good. Brian Kilmeade, during a recent episode of Fox & Friends in which he and his cohosts were discussing the issue, proposed something truly horrific: culling the ocean of sharks. “[This] could happen anywhere,” he said. “You would think that they would have a way of clearing the waters… but I guess they don’t.”

Sharks are absolutely essential to the health of our oceans. Many species are already endangered, and with climate change’s effect on the ocean, the situation will only get worse. We need to be protecting these animals, not advocating their eradication. Sign the petition below to demand that Kilmeade apologize for his reckless remarks at once.

Dear Mr. Kilmeade,

I am writing you today regarding comments you made on a recent edition of Fox & Friends. Specifically, you suggested that sharks should be “cleared from the waters” so as not to pose a threat to humans enjoying our beaches. This is a profoundly misguided view.

The oceans are sharks’ natural habitat, not ours. When we go swim, or surf, or scuba dive, we enter the water with the knowledge that we are no longer in our domain. The idea that we should kill off sharks just so that we can be more comfortable in the water is unethical and absurd.

Indeed, sharks are already in dire straits in every ocean around the world due to climate change and our overfishing and hunting of them. The priority needs to be protecting these animals, not slaughtering them.

Your comments were senseless and amounted to nothing more than fear-mongering and the advancement of ecological and environmental destruction. I condemn your statements and demand that you immediately publicly apologize for your reckless advocacy.
