Target: US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vislack
Goal: Ban the sale and cultivation of toxic and contaminating GMO foods.
Genetically modified foods used to be quite a controversial issue, say maybe ten years ago. At this point, nobody who is trying to make the argument that GMOs are OK is taken seriously. Consumers are outraged and retail outlets are scrambling to get off a sinking ship. There is no evidence that GMOs are safe, and nobody is trying to prove that they are. One of the primary reasons that GMOs are created is simply to create a crop that will survive insane levels of herbicide applications. If we don’t know that the genetic changes themselves make these foods unfit for human consumption, we do know that the toxicity acquired by them in cultivation makes them unsafe. But now research is showing that the altered genetic structures of these foods are damaging to human health as well.
Farmers who want to grow heirloom crops are having their genetics compromised by Monsanto’s GMOs as well. Therefore, GMOs’ mere existence is a threat to the continued existence of viable food crops. Farmers are filing suit against Monsanto for this and winning.
Outraged consumers are demanding that GMO foods be labeled so that they have the option of avoiding them. But this is a mere half-measure. It implies that we are OK with GMO foods being cultivated and sold as food. We should not be OK with that and we should make this known. Let the FDA know that you don’t want toxic Frankenfoods on the shelves at your supermarket and you don’t want them growing in fields next to the fields that are your food source. There is no good reason for these to exist. Ban GMO foods.
Dear Secretary Vilsack,
The majority of our country is united in our outrage against Monsanto and its GMO foods. They are unfit for human consumption and their cultivation contaminates their neighbors’ crops. You are probably inundated with petitions to label GMO foods. I am writing today to demand, not that you label GMO foods, but you ban them altogether. They should not be consumed, they should not be cultivated, therefore, I do not want them being sold as food or cultivated in my country.
It is your job to protect the public from hazards like this one. I am not satisfied with half-measures like GMO labeling. It is your duty to get GMOS out of the food pool altogether and I must insist that you do so. I urge you to ban the sale and cultivation of GM food crops in the United States.
