Success: Cheerleaders Guaranteed Employment Benefits

Target: California Governor Jerry Brown

Goal: Thank California’s governor for guaranteeing cheerleaders’ pay and benefits.

Professional cheerleaders will finally be guaranteed pay and other employment benefits in California, thanks to a recently-passed law officially recognizing cheerleaders as real employees. Applaud this state for doing the right thing and protecting the rights of its cheerleaders.

For decades, cheerleaders around the country have been being shortchanged by the billion-dollar professional sports industry, where they were regularly denied minimum wage, sick leave, and overtime pay. In many cases their exploitation was so extreme that they would have made virtually no money at all by the end of their respective sport’s season.

Fortunately, this issue has been gaining national attention, and lawmakers are taking it on. Thanks to the dedicated activism of people who would not accept such gratuitous exploitation of workers’ labor at the hands of an industry that takes in billions of dollars every year, including those here at ForceChange, California’s governor has passed a law categorizing cheerleaders as legitimate employees who are entitled to the full range of benefits afforded such individuals.

In the fight for a just economic system it is all too easy to get discouraged and lose hope, but victories like this one give all cause to be inspired and reinvigorated. Sign the petition below to thank the governor of California, Jerry Brown, for making sure that cheerleaders are given fair treatment.

Dear Governor Brown,

I am writing you today regarding the law you recently passed that recognized cheerleaders as legitimate employees and guaranteed them at least minimum wage, overtime pay, and sick leave. This was a necessary legal overhaul and I applaud you for making it happen.

American professional sports brings in more than a billion dollars every single year. When an industry is literally inundated with money like this, there is absolutely no excuse for every single one of its employees not to be generously compensated for their work. Of course, as I’m sure you know, that’s exactly what this industry was refusing to do for its cheerleaders for so many years.

With this new law, that will no longer be the case. Cheerleaders will finally be afforded the rights, compensation, and benefits that every single worker deserves. What’s more is that your state’s passage of the law will in all likelihood influence other states to pass similar bills, guaranteeing other cheerleaders around the nation fair wages and rights.

You can rest easy knowing that you helped ensure workers in your state a fair shake, and that you contributed to a burgeoning national campaign to protect cheerleaders and their labor. I thank you for doing the right thing and supporting the cheerleaders in your state.
