Justice for Woman Found Dead in Jail

Target: Waller County Texas Police Chief, James Fulton

Goal: Conduct investigation into death of woman reportedly found hanging in jail cell.

A 28-year old woman reportedly ended up dead after being pulled over and thrown in a Texas jail for allegedly assaulting an officer. The sheriff’s office reportedly told her family that her death was a “self-inflicted asphyxiation,” but her family and friends don’t believe it after seeing a video purporting to show her arrest where she can be heard asking why she’s being treated so roughly over a simple traffic violation. The video shows an officer slamming the woman’s head on the ground.

Both friends and family of the woman have reportedly told outlets that she would’ve never taken her own life, saying she was too excited about beginning her new student outreach job at her university.

The woman’s family lawyer reportedly released a statement to the Chicago Tribune, stating “The family is confident that she was killed and did not commit suicide. The family has retained counsel to investigate [her] death.”

Many people close to the victim believe her death was a lynching, not a suicide.

A friend of the victim reportedly said police were guilty of negligence and that unless a federal investigation is opened, she fears the family will never get the truth regarding this tragedy.

She spoke out about this type of stuff in her life, and now in her death, she’s a hashtag,” the victim’s friend reportedly said, referring to police brutality.

According to Waller County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers are investigating, but a federal investigation would help bring this poor woman justice by ensuring that the truth — no matter who it may not favor — is found.

Clearly, this young woman’s questionable death is worthy of a proper investigation, especially since she was only put in jail for a simple violation and most people don’t commit suicide as soon as they’re put in jail for something they’ll likely get out of.

Please demand the Waller County Police Chief ensure a proper and thorough investigation is conducted to reveal the truth for this poor woman’s family.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear James Fulton,

An African-American woman was reportedly found dead in her jail cell after she was arrested during a traffic stop. The police reportedly claim she assaulted an officer, but a video that emerged online shows her as the victim being assaulted.

The victims friends and family are certain she didn’t hang herself, but believe her death was a lynching. Since the details surrounding her death raise too many questions for it not to be investigated thoroughly, we urge you to take action and ensure a proper investigation is conducted to find the truth in this woman’s tragic death.

Sincerely,
