Stop Putting Confederate Flags on Police Uniforms and Patrol Cars

Target: Gettysburg Mayor Bill Wuttke

Goal: Get rid of police uniform and car seal that includes the racist Confederate flag.

The white supremacist Confederate flag is proudly displayed on the official police seal of Gettysburg, South Dakota. Our nation’s law enforcement should not be desperately holding onto the vestiges of the country’s shameful past. Demand that this bigoted seal be revoked from use as soon as possible.

The recent attack on a black church in South Carolina that left nine people dead has renewed calls for governments around the country to finally sever their ties with the historic Confederacy and its ubiquitous flag. This campaign has reached Gettysburg, where the police officers’ uniforms and patrol cars are emblazoned with graphics depicting the Confederate flag.

Despite calls for the removal of this symbol from every facet of the police department, Gettysburg’s mayor and police chief have stood firm and refused to cooperate. “We’re a small community in central South Dakota, and if some blacks want to come in here we’ll respect them,” the mayor Bill Wuttke said. “We had an air base out here, and we had the blacks that came, and there was none of them that felt like we were discriminating against them.”

The Confederate flag is a symbol of violent white supremacy and hate and it has no place being any part of our modern law enforcement agencies, despite what government officials may say to defend it. Sign the petition below to demand that this hateful police department stop using this offensive seal on its uniforms and patrol cars at once.

Dear Mayor Wuttke,

I am writing you today regarding the seal that your town’s police department uses on its uniforms and patrol cars that proudly displays the Confederate flag. Despite your arguments to the contrary, this is a hateful artifact of American history and you should stop branding your police department with it at once.

The nonchalance with which you call African Americans “some blacks”—as well as the implication that your town belongs to white people and not black people—speaks to just how oblivious you are with regard to race in America today. I hope you intend no harm, but regardless your positions are so out of touch they are no longer relevant.

The Confederate flag is a symbol of violent white supremacy and racism, and a community of wealthy white Americans’ willingness to secede from the United States and go to war to be able to continue to own black people as property. That is a historical fact that cannot be denied.

Even if you don’t mean to communicate it when you emblazon your police officers with Confederate flags, the message you are putting out is that your city and its law enforcement do not consider black people equal. I’m sure that’s not what you want people to think of Gettysburg, so there’s only one thing to be done. I demand that you immediately end the use of this Confederate seal in your police department.
