Regulate Rawhide that Kills Family Pets

Target: Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration Dr. Steven Ostroff

Goal: Provide better testing and regulation for rawhide dog treats that have taken the lives of countless animals.

Rawhide can easily become a blockage in an animal’s digestive system and leave them dead overnight if it’s improperly made. Dozens of tragic stories have poured in from all over the country about the devastating losses of family friends due to illnesses caused by rawhide chews. It’s the FDA’s job and responsibility to make sure that harmful foods and toys are not allowed on the market, and they can start by strictly regulating, labeling, and researching rawhide products.

MooMoo the French Bulldog was only a year and half old when his owners gave him a treat and put him to bed. When they awoke the next morning, MooMoo was dead. Despite their knowledge of the dangers of rawhide, the treat packaging had not been marked anywhere to indicate that it was rawhide–only with “beefhide.”

Many people treat their pets like members of their families, and for most this sudden and shocking loss would crush them. These pet food manufacturers only treat them like the personal property that federal law appoints them to be. Tell the FDA that you will not tolerate the senseless loss of more animals because of their negligence and order them to regulate rawhide.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ordering Commissioner Dr. Ostroff,

I writing to demand the strict regulation and labeling of rawhide pet products due to the senseless damage and death that they have already caused. Dozens of dogs have been injured or even killed because of a single rawhide treat, some of them overnight, and it should be your responsibility as the Food and Drug Administration to make sure harmful products are not allowed on the public market without warning, both for humans and pets.

Even with pet owners receiving prior warning and education on rawhide treats, not all of these products are labeled to indicate that they contain rawhide. It needs to be required of pet food manufacturers to specifically label their products with the known dangers and side effects of their ingredients. The only way that we will ever fully be able to keep track of the safety of the foods we give our pets is by implementing the strict testing, labeling, and regulation of all rawhide and beefhide products.

Sincerely,
