Tell Instagram to Change Hateful Bodyshaming Policy

instagram-by-ja-moutinho

Target: Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram

Goal: Change the bodyshaming policy that bans users from putting the hashtag #curvy with their pictures.

Instagram has come under fire recently when users discovered it no longer allows users to put the hashtag #curvy with their photos. Instagram claims it banned the hashtag because it was used for porn and therefore violated the site’s terms of service.

However, users have been quick to point out that many other questionable hashtags are still searchable, such as “skinny,” “fat” and “thin.” Advocates for improving body image previously utilized the hashtag in order to increase visibility and acceptance of all body sizes.

The company has been in hot water in the past for how it seems to police women’s bodies on the social media platform.

Artist Sam Roddick said, “They have banned images of breast feeding, stretch marks, domestic images of menstruation and classical art works that respectfully portray nude women and now they ban the hashtag #curvy,” while it still allows “b***h, fat slag, hookers, thin,”

As if those other policies weren’t bad enough, now Instagram thinks it’s okay to have a bodyshaming policy. Tell Instagram this isn’t okay, and urge them to change this damaging policy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Kevin Systrom,

Instagram has come under fire recently when users discovered it no longer allows users to put the hashtag #curvy with their photos. users have been quick to point out that many other questionable hashtags are still searchable, such as “skinny,” “fat” and “thin.” Advocates for improving body image previously utilized the hashtag in order to increase visibility and acceptance of all body sizes.

This isn’t the first time your company has tried to police female users and their bodies. This bodyshaming policy isn’t okay, and I urge you to change this damaging policy.

Sincerely,
