Target: Bill Gray, President and Chairman of the Calgary Stampede Board of Directors

Goal: End the chuckwagon event at the Calgary Stampede, which resulted in the euthanasia of four horses this year alone.

Four horses were euthanized after sustaining grave injuries during this year’s Calgary Stampede, an annual rodeo and exhibition held in Alberta, Canada. The festival, which attracts visitors from all over Canada and the United States, sees horses seriously injured in the chuckwagon events almost every year, with the past two years seeing one death each. Despite this, the organizers allow the event to continue, resulting in more casualties each year.

This year, two horses were euthanized after sustaining suspensory ligament injuries, a type of damage that is often irreparable and can cause the end of a sporting horse’s career. Two more were injured during accidents caused by driver error, one with a broken leg and another with trauma to a joint above the hoof. These injuries can make horses useless for racing and can result in lifelong pain, and they therefore had to be euthanized as well.

The tradition of the Calgary Stampede dates back over 100 years, and has become one of the largest and most famous events of its kind in the entire world. As such, the organizers should strive to keep up the highest standards in their treatment of animals. Despite changes to the rules of the chuckwagon races over time, animals continue to be unnecessarily injured and euthanized. Sign the petition below to demand that the chuckwagon races be permanently pulled from the Calgary Stampede in order to save horses from unnecessary suffering and death.

Dear Mr. Bill Gray,

Four horses were euthanized after sustaining serious injuries during the chuckwagon races at the annual Calgary Stampede. Two of the horses suffered severe ligament injuries, one broke its leg after coming into contact with a wagon at high speeds, and another sustained trauma to a ligament above the hoof. Because these injuries usually mark the end of a horse’s racing career and can result in lifelong pain, all four had to be put down.

The Calgary Stampede is one of the biggest events of its kind, and is a major attraction for visitors from across Canada and the United States. Because of this, the Calgary Stampede should work to become a leader in animal welfare. We, the undersigned, demand that the chuckwagon races, which often result in the death of at least one horse per year, are cancelled permanently.
