Success: Workers Guaranteed Paid Sick Leave

Target: Oregon Governor Kate Brown

Goal: Thank Oregon’s governor for guaranteeing workers in her state paid sick leave.

Workers will now be guaranteed the right to paid sick leave in the state of Oregon regardless of their level of income, thanks to a new law that has been signed into law. Applaud the state for being on the side of the worker and bringing American workers’ rights into the 21st century.

For all the praise the United States heaps on itself for its self-concept as a shining city on a hill, it unfortunately lags behind much of the rest of the world in terms of workers’ rights. Every other developed country on the planet guarantees their workers paid sick leave, but America does not have such laws on the books. As a result, workers around the country are forced far too often to decide between their income and their health.

Fortunately, this unacceptable state of affairs is starting to be recognized, and people are being stirred to action. Thanks to the passionate activism of people who would not abide the exploitation of the American worker, including those here at ForceChange, Oregon’s Governor Kate Brown signed a protection into law guaranteeing the vast majority of workers in her state paid sick leave.

This is a huge victory, and one that we can savor for the help it will bring to millions of Americans—with luck, it will cause a domino effect and similar laws will be put in place in the rest of our country’s states. Sign the petition below to thank Governor Brown for helping the working class is her state get a fair shake.

Dear Governor Brown,

I am writing you today regarding Senate Bill 454, the guaranteed sick leave proposal that you recently signed into law. I wanted to take the time to thank you for doing the right thing.

Before this bill became law, almost half off all the workers in your state did not have the right to paid sick days—and that number jumped to 70 percent when looking at low-wage workers specifically. This was a shameful state of affairs that could not have been allowed to continue, especially in light of the guarantee of such rights in every single other developed country around the world.

Thanks to you, that will no longer be the case. The vast majority of the workers in your state will no longer be forced to decide between being able to pay their bills and maintaining their own health—a decision that no American should have to make.

In the absence of a federal law affording workers around the country such a guarantee, state laws are the best we can do. If the rest of the states in the nation were as progressive as you, we would all be better off. I thank you for doing the right thing and supporting the rights of workers in your state.
