Change Racist Mississippi State Flag

Target: Philip Gunn, Speaker of the Mississippi House

Goal: Change the state flag of Mississippi so it no longer incorporates the racist Confederate flag into its design.

The racist Confederate flag was recently taken down from the South Carolina State House grounds amidst the shooting of nine black churchgoers by a racist white murderer in Charleston. Now, some residents of Mississippi feel the racism within their own state flag may need to be addressed, as it is the only U.S. state flag that incorporates the Southern cross seen on the Confederate flag.

Apparently, Phil Bryant, the state’s governor, refuses to call a special session to discuss the flag despite leading state officials asking him to do so. Philip Gunn, the Republican speaker of the state house, was vocal shortly after the Charleston shooting about changing the racist symbolism on the state flag.

“As a Christian, I believe our state’s flag has become a point of offense that needs to be removed. We need to begin having conversations about changing Mississippi’s flag,” Gunn said.

Leaders of the Confederate movement were essentially traitors of their own country, sparking a civil war over one of the most, if not the most, horrific times in American history: slavery. The present continues as a critical time for the handling of systematic racism in the country. Changing the racist symbolism of the Mississippi state flag is a step in the right direction. Urge lawmakers to change the racist Mississippi state flag.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Philip Gunn,

The racist Confederate flag was recently taken down from the South Carolina State House grounds amidst the shooting of nine black churchgoers by a racist white murderer in Charleston. Now, some residents of Mississippi feel the racism within their own state flag may need to be addressed.

I commend you for taking a stand to change the flag.

I urge you to continue to fight to change the racist Mississippi state flag.

Sincerely,
