Target: Florida State Prosecutor Phil Archer
Goal: Don’t charge 16-year-old with murder for the death of her boyfriend who was killed by a cop.
A suicidal teen is being charged with second-degree murder as an adult after a police officer killed her boyfriend. Even though the cop was the one who shot and killed the boy, 16-year-old Morgan McNeil is being charged with his murder because she allegedly told her boyfriend to point the gun at the officer. She’s also being charged with attempted first-degree murder because the pair were reportedly planning to commit suicide together.
A suicidal 16-year-old girl who just lost her boyfriend needs help, not to be thrown in prison with adults. It’s detrimental to any child’s health to be put in prison with adults, but it’s absolutely ridiculous to charge her as an adult with murder when she didn’t even touch a gun. This is likely just another way to take the responsibility off of police officers who use lethal force against mentally ill people.
Anyone who is suicidal needs compassion and care. Putting a suicidal person into one of our overcrowded, horrible prisons will likely only make her want to kill herself more as she’s exposed to abuse and assault from the criminal adults surrounding her. This child needs to be placed in a mental health facility where she can get the help she needs. Sign this petition to demand that the murder charges against her be dropped and that she is tried as a minor for any lesser charges.
Dear Mr. Archer,
I understand that Morgan McNeil, the 16-year-old girl who was driving to Ohio to commit suicide with her boyfriend, has been charged with second-degree murder after the police officer who pulled them over shot and killed the teen boy. She is being tried as an adult for that and for attempted first-degree murder because they were both planning to kill themselves.
This makes no sense to me. It’s bad enough to criminalize suicidal people when what they need more than anything is compassion and urgent mental health care. This girl was clearly not in her right mind during the incident, but either way, she never even touched a gun. How can she possibly be charged with murder?
I hope you can find it in your heart to show this mentally ill girl the kindness and understanding she desperately needs after she’s endured so much suffering that it drove her to want to commit suicide only to lose her boyfriend in an undoubtedly traumatic incident. A 16-year-old suicidal girl should never be tried as a fully-developed adult, and it makes no sense to try and throw her in an adult prison where she will be vulnerable to abuse from the older and larger adult inmates and will not be able to access the mental health care she needs.
Please drop the murder charges against Morgan McNeil and push for her to be charged as the minor she is.
