Don’t Defund the Environmental Protection Agency

The litter problem on the coast of Guyana-by Nils Ally

Target: President of the United States of America, Barack Obama

Goal: Remove anti-environmental policies that aim to underfund environmental protection.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and central departments of the interior programs could soon have its funding severely cut if a bill being debated in the United States House of Representatives passes as-is. Underfunding means that protection of human health, air, water and land resources is at high risk.

The bill, referred to as H.R 2822, seeks to make appropriations for the department of interior and its related agencies. It will prevent investments that seek to reduce future costs incurred by taxpayers and will make it more difficult for businesses and states to execute necessary changes to reduce carbon pollution and address climate change issues.

The bill has more than 20 anti-environmental policies that are going to protect the selfish interests of polluters. Some of the policies include stopping clean water act protections for waterways that feed most Americans, blocking national limits on carbon pollution from power plants, and preventing the consideration of Endangered Species Act protections.  The cut on EPA and its related agencies goes against the desire of Americans to preserve open space, protect water, air, and address climate change to improve life.

Enacting this bill will hurt the American economy and shortchange crucial investments. Further, the bill will prevent EPA from updating one of the most important air quality standards. This air standard involves regulating the ozone as ozone pollution is very harmful to adults and children who are asthmatic. The bill will block the carbon pollution standards for power plants, which was going to prevent thousands from asthma attacks.

In addition, it will remove protections for American rivers and oceans from pollution while leaving wildlife vulnerable to harm. American citizens have supported these high standards for ages, and it will not make sense to return the country back considering the numerous efforts that have been made for a safer, cleaner and healthier environment.

The role of the American government is to protect its citizens from pollution. American citizens cannot accord such protection by themselves without the assistance of the government. In fact, what the government ought to be doing is increasing funding for agencies that aim to protect public health and the environment. Sign this petition to remove the harmful clauses from this draconian bill.

Dear President Obama,

Recently, the House proposed the passing of a bill that aims to cut funding for the America’s environment, health and land protections. Congress should invest in the future of America by not returning the country to a land with harsh laws and little funding for programs that protect communities. This spending bill is an assault on the air Americans breathe, the water they drink, their wildlife, and the places they hold dear.

In addition, this bill undermines the administration’s efforts to protect the health of communities in America, including those that are more vulnerable, like the elderly and children.  I urge you to oppose all anti-environmental amendments and support pro-environmental changes.
