Target: Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin
Goal: Stop violating the Constitution and remove statue of the Ten Commandments from state grounds.
Republican politicians are refusing to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from state capitol grounds in Oklahoma after the state supreme court told them that such a monument was illegal. This is at once both a willful disregard for American governmental checks and balances and American freedom of religion. Demand that Oklahoma’s Republican government immediately comply with the Supreme Court and remove this illegal monument at once.
For years, a six-foot-high stone statue of two tablets with the Ten Commandments of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam written on them has been resting on the grounds of the state capitol in Oklahoma City. In a recent 7-2 decision, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that it must be removed immediately because it is “obviously religious in nature” and as such violates a state constitution clause banning the use of public property for religious purposes.
Calling this constitutional provision “toxic” and the court’s decision “judicial tyranny,” the state’s Republican lawmakers and governor have defied their supreme court and refused to remove the monument from the capitol. Since the entire state government is ruled by a Republican majority, there is little else that can be done to rein in their defiance.
Our democracy breaks down if the rule of the our highest courts is not followed by the other branches of government—not only do these Republicans’ actions violate Americans’ right to separation of church and state, they endanger our entire system of government. Sign the petition below to demand that Republican Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin immediately comply with the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s ruling and remove this illegal religious statue from the state capitol.
Dear Governor Fallin,
I am writing you today regarding the arrogance you and your Republican colleagues are currently displaying regarding the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s order that the Ten Commandments monument on the state capitol grounds be removed. Your wanton disregard for our way of government is astonishing and should be put to an end at once.
Your state’s supreme court was created explicitly to check the executive and legislative branches of Oklahoma government and ensure that they do not violate the state Constitution and the rights guaranteed your residents. The nine members of your supreme court have the final say whether you like it or not.
In this case, its opinion on the Ten Commandments statue was definitive—it violates your constitution and must be taken away. Neither you nor your state’s legislators have the right to refuse to enforce that ruling. The fact that you apparently think you do is downright unbelievable.
Even if your state were to revoke the relevant clause from the state constitution that makes this statue illegal, the monument would no doubt still be in violation of the federal constitution and have to be removed anyway. You should spare everyone the trouble and abide by the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s decision. I demand that you immediately remove this illegal monument from the state capitol grounds.
