Success: Racist Confederate Flag Voted to be Taken Down

Target: Republican Senator Tom Davis

Goal: Applaud the passing of a bill in the South Carolina senate that would remove the racist Confederate flag from flying at the state’s capitol.

Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Stop Flying the Racist Confederate Flag Above South Carolina Capitol, a bill that would ban the racist Confederate flag from flying at the South Carolina capitol passed in the state’s senate by a 37-3 vote, far over the two-thirds majority it needed to pass. The bill will now move on to the South Carolina House of Representatives.

In addition to passing the bill, the Senate rejected three amendments to it: one that would have put a different Confederate flag on the pole, another that would fly the flag only on Confederate Memorial Day, and one that would leave the flag’s fate up to a popular vote.

If the bill passes in the house, then shortly after as soon as Governor Nikki Haley signs the papers, both the flag and the pole it is flown on will be removed immediately. Just over 50 years ago the flag was flown at the statehouse to protest integration of black and white societies in America.

Republican Senator Tom Davis said, “”We now have the opportunity, the obligation, to put the exclamation point on an extraordinary narrative of good and evil, of love and mercy that will take its place in the history books.”

Applaud the passing of this bill without any ridiculous amendments, and have faith that it will also pass in the house.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Tom Davis,

I am so glad to hear that a bill that would ban the racist Confederate flag from flying at the South Carolina capitol passed in the state’s senate by a 37-3 vote, far over the two-thirds majority it needed to pass, and that the bill will now move on to the South Carolina House of Representatives.

I applaud you and the other senators who also rejected three amendments to the bill: one that would have put a different Confederate flag on the pole, another that would fly the flag only on Confederate Memorial Day, and one that would leave the flag’s fate up to a popular vote.

Thank you and the other senators who voted to pass this bill for taking a stand for what’s right and stomping out a gross hate symbol that should no longer be flown at the statehouse.

Sincerely,
