Target: Dodge Correctional Institution Warden Marc W. Clements
Goal: Fire guard who reportedly made a racist joke about lynching black people, including President Barack Obama.
Allegedly joking about centuries of anti-black violence and of the assassination of the first black President of the United States was only enough to get a guard at the Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin suspended for one day, according to reports. Our country’s criminal justice system is stacked against black people and other racial minorities, and the racism of prison guards contributes to that. Demand that this guard be fired as soon as possible for his reported racist remarks.
The “Black Lives Matter” movement has been gaining traction around the country in response to the continued murder of black men and women at the hands of law enforcement. Apparently, this made Correctional Officer Collin Visser quite upset. In the comment section of a newspaper article discussing a local Black Lives Matter rally, Visser allegedly shared a photo of a Christmas ornament showing President Obama’s face and wrote with apparent glee, “Look guys. Obama Christmas ornaments. Suddenly it’s legal to hang a black man from a tree again!”
After this was brought to the attention of Dodge Correctional Institution authorities, Visser was investigated and found to be in violation of a number of department work rules for his alleged comment. Despite the outrageous content of the remark, he was only forced to endure a one-day suspension and to attend diversity training as punishment.
Violent racism cannot and should not be tolerated in anyone, but especially not in those who have power over a population of people entirely under their control. Sign the petition below to demand that the Dodge Correctional Institution’s Warden Marc W. Clements fire Officer Visser for his racist remarks.
Dear Warden Clements,
I am writing you today regarding Correctional Officer Collin Visser. It’s recently come to light that he is still a part of your staff at the Dodge Correctional Institution despite the comment you found him responsible for regarding the lynching of black people and of the President of the United States. Frankly, this is alarming.
There is nothing funny about a form of racialized murder that has been used for centuries to kill black people and terrorize black communities. There is nothing funny about generally suggesting that the President of the United States should be assassinated, or specifically that the first African American President should be lynched. One should not have to attend diversity training to know this.
Officer Visser betrayed profound personal bias with his alleged comment and one that is inherently dangerous given his position of authority over prisoners in your correctional facility. You have already found him responsible for the remark—now, for the safety of your inmates, there is only one thing that can be done. I demand that you dismiss Officer Visser from your staff as soon as possible.
