Success: Lions Return to Country Where They Were Extinct

Target: Jes Gruner, Akagera park director in Rwanda

Goal: Applaud the return of lions to Rwanda where they were extinct following the country’s genocide in 1994.

Thanks in part to conservation efforts made from petitions like ForceChange’s Save Majestic Lions from Imminent Extinction, two male lions and five female lions were released recently in Rwanda’s eastern Akagera National Park. The lions were wiped out and made extinct in the country following its 1994 genocide.

Akagera park director Jes Gruner said, “It is a huge conservation milestone, it is a beginning of a fantastic chapter for lions in Rwanda.”

In the wake of the genocide, Rwandan people killed the lions, often by poisoning, so the lions wouldn’t kill their livestock. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said recently that on an international level, lions are still categorized as vulnerable.

However, this small victory is a victory nonetheless. The introduction of these beautiful creatures back into a country where they were once extinct can provide hope that we can do the same in other parts of the world where lions are endangered and vulnerable to extinction. By signing this petition, you will help to thank Jes Gruner, Akagera park director in Rwanda, who aided in making this happen.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Jes Gruner,

Two male lions and five female lions were released recently in Rwanda’s eastern Akagera National Park. The lions were wiped out and made extinct following the 1994 genocide in your country. Although the lions are still categorized as vulnerable on a global level, this small victory is a victory nonetheless.

The introduction of these beautiful creatures back into a country where they were once extinct can provide hope that we can do the same in other parts of the world where lions are endangered and vulnerable to extinction. Thank you for aiding in making this happen.

Sincerely,
