Don’t Ban Women from Watching Sports

Target: International Volleyball Federation President Ary Graça

Goal: Penalize Iran for banning women from being spectators at a tournament in Tehran.

Iranian women and young girls are still banned from being spectators at an international volleyball men’s tournament in Iran’s capital. The International Volleyball Federation should penalize Iranian authorities for continuing to uphold the ban.

In the four previous matches that took place in Tehran in the weeks prior to the recent final two matches, officials prevented Iranian women from entering the estimated 12,000 seating capacity and only allowed a small number of foreign women inside the stadium where the event was taking place.

The International Volleyball Federation has failed to penalize Iran or even speak out to condemn the act which discriminates against women and fails to treat men and women equally at sporting events. The next major men’s international volleyball tournament that Iran is scheduled to host is the 2015 Asian Volleyball Championships from July 31st to August 8th. Sign this petition to ensure that Iranian authorities will be penalized for their discriminatory actions so that women and girls can be enjoy the next tournament in Iran.

Dear International Volleyball Federation President Ary Graça,

I am writing this letter to you to demand that you penalize Iranian authorities for banning women and girls from being spectators at a men’s volleyball tournament in the nation’s capital. According to Human Rights Watch Director of Global Initiates Minky Worden, “Despite promises to the contrary, Iranian authorities have repeatedly scorned the rules that allow women to cheer for their national volleyball team alongside their male counterparts.” I believe that the FIVB should monetarily penalize Iran for discriminating against women.

If Iranian authorities do not agree to lift the ban on women and girls, the 2015 Asian Volleyball Championship taking place in Iran from July 31st to August 8th of this year needs to be rescheduled to a different location that will allow for both male and female spectators.

I am disappointed in the International Volleyball Federation has not spoken out thus far against the unfair and ignorant discrimination against women. Action needs to be taken and I urge you to penalize Iran so that the FIVB will not longer be associated with sexism and discrimination.
