Target: President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solís
Goal: Protect leatherback sea turtles, nests, and volunteers from violent threats by poachers.
A group of volunteers with a sea turtle conservationist was assaulted physically and sexually by poachers in Costa Rica as they were trying to protect an endangered species of sea turtle that nests in the area. The conservationist and three female volunteers were kidnapped by masked men and dragged into a car from the beach, where he was dragged behind the truck until his death from asphyxiation. The remaining three women were sexually assaulted, but managed to escape.
Confidential informants have notified authorities that the poachers are planning another assault on Sea Shepard beach in an attempt to intimidate volunteers working in the area to protect the leatherback turtles as part of Operation Jairo. It is the responsibility of Costa Rican authorities to protect an endangered species that is native to their land, as well as the foreign volunteer workers and specialists who have devoted themselves to this cause. Costa Rica has always prided itself in being an eco-conscious nation, and we are asking them now to follow through with their public image. Tell the President of Costa Rica to stop the brutal violence that these animal poachers are bringing upon both the animal and human community.
Dear President Luis Guillermo Solís,
Recently Spain lost a young and beloved sea turtle conservationist after being kidnapped by poachers along with three American women, who were also sexually assaulted before thankfully escaping. This man lost his life and these women’s lives were permanently affected by the actions of leatherback sea turtle poachers on the shores of your beaches while doing their part with Operation Jairo to protect this endangered species. These crimes are destructive enough on their own, but confidential informants have given knowledge about another planned assault being constructed as an intimidation tactic towards the volunteers working tirelessly to protect the eggs and newborns of endangered turtles.
I am asking, as a person concerned for the well-being of the environment as well as its protectors, for you to step in and stop these illegal animal poachers from capturing animals or threatening and murdering other people in the process. Much of your budget revolves around eco-tourism and your green image, so it is time for you to follow through on that. Prosecute the murderers of Jairo Mora Sandoval and the sexual predators with them that are continuing to terrorize your beaches.
