Target: Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General
Goal: Congratulate an organization for working to successfully eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission and syphilis.
HIV/AIDS is a major incurable virus that affects millions of people in the world. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) validated Cuba as the first country to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. This is a great step toward eliminating HIV/AIDS from the world in general, and efforts to work on worldwide elimination should continue with everyone’s support.
Every year, approximately 1.4 million women who are HIV positive become pregnant. If they do not receive treatment for their virus, there is a 15 to 45 percent chance of transmitting HIV to their offspring. Efforts to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis will greatly impact soon-to-be mothers who are HIV positive and want to be sure that HIV will not get transmitted to their babies. With access to antiretroviral treatment and other medical resources, mothers can be comforted in the fact that HIV transmission to their babies is now extremely unlikely.
As this previous petition details, it was uncertain as to the actual effectiveness of the measures taken in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The recent triumph in Cuba proves that the dedication and investment in time that WHO has put into the fight has paid off.
By signing the petition below, you are congratulating the WHO for Cuba’s recent validation of the elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission and syphilis. Support WHO’s hard work and its continued initiative to eliminate HIV and syphilis transmission in all countries.
Dear Dr. Margaret Chan,
I am writing to you in regards to the recent news about the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis in Cuba. This comes as great news for all the work that is being done to eliminate and prevent the transmission of HIV and syphilis in countries throughout the world. Women who are HIV positive and have access to the necessary medical resources are now able to deliver healthy, HIV-free babies.
Congratulations on the great accomplishment in Cuba. This serves as an inspiration for other countries to follow suit in eliminating the possibility for mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. I look forward to hearing about more achievements that come about from the continued efforts of the WHO.
