End Alleged Capture of Foxes for Future Hunting

Target: George Eustice, Minister of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)

Goal: Stop local hunts that are allegedly capturing foxes to hunt them illegally in future.

Sixteen foxes have been secretly held in captivity to be hunted illegally in the future according to the League Against Cruel Sports, an animal charity. The foxes were being kept in a shed near Malton, North Yorkshire. The charity further revealed that these foxes were being fed dead chicken after being removed from their natural habitat. North Yorkshire police raided the premises and arrested an employee who was found feeding the foxes. One died immediately after rescue while 15 foxes were successfully saved.

It is not clear why people would capture young foxes and keep them away from their natural habitat. The most likely reason is that they capture these foxes to ensure that there is a ready supply that can be chased by the hunt. The League Against Cruel Sports reported that according to its intelligence and testimony from individuals who have involved themselves in hunts, raising foxes for future hunting is a past trend that is still being practiced among hunts.

According to the charity’s investigations, 20 hunts allowed the capturing of foxes in the past 15 months despite the fact that fox hunting was banned in 2004. Footage around the Leicestershire/Northamptonshire reported a young fox being fed by members of a hunt before being released only to be chased by hounds. A local association also provided a video showing foxes being fed by members of a hunt.

A minority group is campaigning to remove the Hunting Act, arguing that the use of dogs for hunting is a form of “fox control.” Hunting with dogs should never be considered fox control–it is just a cruel sport. Sign this petition to help end this cruel practice.

Dear George Eustice,

An animal rights charity, League Against Cruel Sports (LACS), discovered 16 live cubs that had been captured by fox hunters who allegedly kept them in captivity to ensure there is a constant supply for their sport. Though the police managed to save some cubs, one succumbed shortly after rescue. It is not right to remove an animal from its natural habitat and keep it in such harsh conditions so that it can be killed in a hunt later. I am pleading with you to take action and investigate local hunts.
